The motorsports media community lost a legend on Thursday with the passing of Ed Hinton at age 76. A fearless storyteller and sharp analyst, Hinton spent nearly five decades covering the sport he loved, writing for Sports Illustrated, the Chicago Tribune, and ultimately ESPN, where he retired in 2014.

Hinton wasn’t just a journalist—he was a force in the press room. He challenged the sport, asked the hard questions, and told the stories that needed to be told. His work shaped motorsports coverage, setting a standard that many in our industry still aspire to today.

For those of us at the Society of Professional Motorsports Journalists, his legacy is one of integrity, tenacity, and a deep respect for the craft. Whether you knew him personally or admired his work from afar, there’s no denying the impact he had on our profession.
